Why is Jesus given distinctive titles in the Quran such as “the Messiah,” “Isa,” and “the Word of God”? Are these merely names… or do they carry deeper meanings?
Let’s try to understand these names calmly and see how the Gospel helps us understand their meaning more clearly.
First: “The Messiah” — Who Is the Anointed One?
The word “Messiah” means: the one anointed by God, that is, the person whom God has chosen for a special mission.
In biblical history, the following were anointed:
- Kings
- Prophets
- Priests
But Jesus was not just one of these… rather, He came to fulfill all these roles.
The Samaritan woman said:
“I know that the Messiah… is coming”
And Jesus said to her, “I who speak to you am He” (John 4:25–26)
And in another passage:
“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matthew 16:16)
Therefore, “the Christ” is not merely a title… but a declaration that Jesus is the one whom God sent to fulfill His plan.
Second: “Isa” — the name by which he lived among people
The name “Isa” is the name by which Jesus is known in the Quran. In the Gospel, his name is “Jesus,” which means:
“God saves”
This meaning was declared from the moment of his birth:
“You will give birth to a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins” (Matthew 1:21)
The name here is not merely a label… but a complete message about his mission.
Third: “The Word of God” — A Very Profound Meaning
This is one of the most thought-provoking titles.
The Quran says that Jesus is “the Word of God.” What does that mean?
When we turn to the Gospel, we find an amazing explanation of this concept.
The Gospel of John begins with these words:
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1)
Then it says:
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us” (John 1:14)
That is, the “Word of God” is not merely a command… but God’s revelation of Himself in a living person.
Jesus is:
- The Word that reveals God
- The Word that reveals His heart
- The Word that drew near to humanity
What do these names have in common?
When we look at these titles together, we see a complete picture:
- “Christ” → the One sent by God
- “Jesus / Isa” → The One Who Saves
- “The Word of God” → God’s Self-Revelation
And this leads us to an important question:
Are these merely names… or do they point to a unique identity?
What does Jesus say about Himself?
Jesus did not speak only in titles… but He declared things that made people wonder:
- “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12)
- “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25)
- “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9)
These are not the words of an ordinary prophet… but a call to deep reflection: Who is Jesus really?

Names are important… but they are not the ultimate goal. They are pointers that lead us to a person. And Jesus did not come merely to be known by names, but to be known personally.
