Breaking the Chain of Hate: How do we triumph with love in an angry world?

In our world full of conflicts, human souls are conditioned to respond to insults in kind, and to deal with the principle of “an eye for an eye.” But in the midst of this noise, we find the teachings of Jesus Christ coming as the greatest challenge to human instinct and psychological emotions, when he said his famous phrase that upended the scales of morality:

“Love your enemies. Bless those who curse you. “Do good to those who hate you.”(Matthew 5:44).

These words may seem, at first glance, strange or beyond human power. How can a person be asked to love someone who has hurt him or bless someone who has cursed him? But whoever contemplates the depth of this guidance realizes that it represents the pinnacle of psychological purification and spiritual transcendence.

The philosophy of rising above harm

Christ’s call to love enemies does not mean surrendering to injustice, accepting humiliation, or justifying the actions of aggressors. Rather, it is an integrated approach that aims to:

    • Breaking the vicious cycle of revenge:When you respond to hate with equal hatred, you are not solving the problem, but rather adding fuel to the fire and contributing to the spread of evil. Breaking this cycle requires a brave heart that refuses to be tainted by the same badness with which it was treated.
    • Love as a voluntary decision, not an emotional feeling:The love intended here is not a “warm affection” that we have for an enemy lurking around us, but rather it is a “moral stance” and a firm decision not to desire revenge or wish evil on the other, but rather to call for guidance and righteousness for him.
    • Imitating God’s broad attributes:Christ justified this principle by saying that God himself“He makes his sun rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unrighteous.”(Matthew 5:45). In both religions, Islam and Christianity, God is the Most Merciful, the Most Merciful, whose dream extends even to those who disobey and deny Him. The true believer is the one who tries to quote this divine dream in his dealings with humans.

Repelling the bad with what is better

This concept strongly coincides with the Qur’anic directives that call for responding to abuse with kindness. Responding with goodness extinguishes the fire of hostility and turns a bitter opponent into a close friend. Reciprocating a curse with blessing is not weakness, but rather the pinnacle of strength and victory over the impulses of the soul that lead to evil.

When you forgive and forgive, you are not only doing so for the sake of the other person, but you are doing it first and foremost for the safety and purity of your own soul.

Question for contemplation and contemplation:When you hate someone, you give them power over your feelings and thinking, and you make them imprison your heart in the dungeon of anger. Could transcendence and love of enemies be the real key to liberating your own heart from restrictions?
