This question may seem simple on the surface, but in reality it opens up a wide space for thought and contemplation. Many people hesitate when they are asked: Is reading the Bible permissible? Could it be useful? Or might it raise questions and confusion that we don’t need?
Before we try to answer quickly, perhaps it is better to stop for a moment and ask calmly: Why does this topic raise some anxiety in the first place?
Some people believe that reading different religious texts may lead to confusion or being influenced by ideas that were not familiar before. This is an understandable feeling, especially when it comes to beliefs. But on the other hand, another important question remains: Should the search for truth be something to be afraid of?
The Gospel, in essence, is a book that talks about the life of Jesus, his teachings, and his way of dealing with people and the big questions in life. Reading it directly gives a person the opportunity to see the text for himself, instead of being satisfied with what is said about it by others, whether that is praise or criticism.
Here is an important point: reading the Bible does not necessarily mean adopting its contents or changing one’s convictions. Reading is not a final decision, but rather a step towards understanding. It is a space to think, ask questions, and reflect. This is normal for any human being who is genuinely searching for meaning.
If a person wants to get started, he does not need to read everything at once or feel overwhelmed by the task. It can start simply, with a few pages, or with short passages, calmly and without pressure. With each reading, he can ask himself a simple question: What does this text say about Jesus? What does it mean to me?
What is important in this journey is not to rush to judgment, whether by rejection or acceptance, but rather to give oneself an opportunity to understand. A person should read with an open mind, not to argue or defend the text, but to try to understand it as it is.
It may also help for reading to be accompanied by a kind of internal honesty, such as asking a person: What do I feel when I read? What thoughts or questions does this talk raise in me?
In a moment of sincerity, there can be a simple prayer, such as: “Lord, if there is anything in these words that brings me closer to the truth, guide me to it.”
In the end, the question remains open to everyone: Is it better to judge something without reading it? Or should we give ourselves an opportunity to research, experiment and understand before passing judgment?
Perhaps the answer does not come from words alone, but from experience itself.
